According to Bob Barr's blog, the NRA will endorse a presidential candidate on Thursday (10/09/08). In the past, the NRA has had problems with McCain supporting Americans for Gun Safety and his work on a bill designed to close the so-called "gun show loophole." In 2004, McCain received a lifetime rating of C+ from the NRA and in 2007, received an F- from Gun Owners of America. Clearly, John McCain is not the right endorsement.
In 2000, Bob Barr, Presidential nominee for the Libertarians, received a lifetime rating of A+ from the NRA and currently serves on the NRA board of directors.
The NRA has a big decision to make on Thursday, go with politics as usual and pick McCain, or pick a candidate who actually supports the Second Amendment. Barr will likely not win the Presidential election, but is on the ballot in 47 states and is a viable candidate. Endorsing Barr over McCain will send a real message to republicans that they are no longer the party of Goldwater and Reagan and they made a mistake in nominating McCain.
I'm not currently a member of the NRA, but am a law abiding gun owner and Second Amendment supporter. Tomorrow's decision by the NRA will show where the organization really stands, will they endorse the Bob Barr, or will they pander to John McCain.
